So the Christmas Holiday Season is almost over…ending in New Years.  I bombed. Fell. Stumbled.  WipeOut!

I ate wheat based items – not once, not twice but 3 times – on three DIFFERENT days!  My daughter made cake balls.  I had to try one, thinking…it will be nice for her mom to at least eat one…three cake balls later.

I didn’t think too much about it.  A moment.

Then I did so good.  I made grain free cookies – with this recipe –  SO amazingly good.  So proud of myself – for taking the time to do it.  Took them to a cookie exchange at a neighbor’s house.  EVERYONE loved them and no one could believe they did not have wheat flour.

Then I went to my mom’s Christmas day.  I did NOT eat the rolls.  But, see there is a FAVORITE cookie that she makes.  I’d AVOIDED them at the cookie exchange – pretending they were not looking all delicious on a plate.  But my mom…how can I possibly say NO to her cookies…

AND I ate chocolate…a lot of it.  While that is NOT listed on the forbidden foods – some chocolate items are FULL of corn syrup.  YEP!  Not straight chocolate bars, the candy that you ONLY get during December of every year.  UGH…

So – I was okay yesterday.  But so – so tired.  And my hands felt slightly swollen and weird – joint pain.  Then I ATE a BURRITO with a flour shell.  Frozen.  From the Store.  PROCESSED, SO VERY BAD.  Within an hour – it is like the Lord said…STOP!!

By the time I went to bed last night – my knees were hurting and my hands continued to hurt.  My mom has TERRIBLE arthritis pain.  I’d read that gluten/wheat can make it worse.  It was NOT psychological.  It was actually happening.  3 days of grains in one form or another including hidden in that dreaded corn syrup – and I’m done.  Sorry.  Repentant.  Turning from the sin of disobedience.  God said to my heart – no grains.  I thought…just a little.

NOPE.  NONE.  Nada, Rien.

just say NO

(By the way – this is a free blog.  IF you happen to see a wheat or grain advertisement – it is because WordPress does that unless you give them $30 for NO ads).  So Don’t think we are making any money on the free ad below.  Just something that our blog host does and they profit not us.  So we aren’t saying buy the products they post – it is based upon our words in the post and your own “search” history.)

Hidden Grains

Suzanne here:  WOW.  So it has been over 2 weeks since I began this journey.  2 weeks without grains.  Or at least I thought so.  Tonight, I had a special treat.  I’ve been quite faithful to what the Lord put on my heart to do.  As a treat, I took my kids to Chick-fil-A.  We LOVE Chick-fil-A.  But it is a treat for us to eat there.  For a family of 6 – our meals can exceed $50.  That gets pricey.  So there were only 4 of us tonight, so we stopped to eat there.  I had a wrap – I just removed the tortilla wrap and ate it like a salad with alot of Chick-fil-A sauce.  But we splurged and got shakes.  It is afterall the Christmas season and they have their Christmas Shakes.  I’d not had one in a couple of years – so I was so EXCITED.

Not so much anymore.  About 15 minutes ago my stomach started rolling.  I started praying.  What did I eat that could cause me to have this symptom.  I won’t go into details, other than to say, the result was not vomiting but something else.  I asked the Lord to show me what could have triggered this.  No, not the wrap.  Not the waffle fries.  ?!?

The shake?  NO……OOOOOOO….OOO…O!!

This is what the website says is in the shake:

Peppermint Chocolate Chip Milkshake: Icedream (whole milk, sugar, nonfat dry milk, artificial flavor, corn starch, mono & diglycerides, microcrystalline cellulose, carrageenan, guar gum, Yellow 5 & 6), milkshake base (whole milk, sugar, cream, whey powder (milk), nonfat dry milk, artificial flavor, disodium phosphate, mono and diglycerides, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, guar gum, cellulose gum, carrageenan), Peppermint syrup (corn syrup, water, glycerin, natural peppermint flavor, citric acid, sodium benzoate as a preservative, red 40), red & white dark chocolate peppermint pieces (peppermint twist [sugar, corn syrup, natural peppermint oil, artificial color {red #3, Red #40, Blue #1}], confectionery coating [sugar, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil {palm kernel, coconut, palm}, cocoa {may be processed with alkali}, whey (milk), soy lecithin as an emulsifier, vanilla], powdered sugar [sugar, corn starch], corn starch, silicon dioxide), whipped cream (cream, milk, sugar, sorbitol, nonfat milk solids, artificial flavor, mono and diglycerides, carrageenan, polysorbate 80, mixed tocopherols [vitamin E] to protect flavor, propellant: nitrous oxide), cherries, (high fructose corn syrup, water, potassium sorbate [a preservative], sodium benzoate [a preservative], citric acid, artificial flavor, FD&C Red #40, sulfur dioxide [a preservative].UGH!!! UGH!!!
Big sad face!

But to add insult to injury…I got curious. Wonder what is in Chick-fil-A sauce…

Really – do I even need to post this?!
Chick-fil-A® Sauce: Soybean oil, sugar, BBQ sauce (tomato puree [water, tomato paste], high fructose corn syrup, vinegar, corn syrup, salt, modified food starch, soybean oil, hydrolyzed soy protein, natural hickory smoke flavor, mustard flour, onion*, spice, garlic*, natural flavor), water, mustard (distilled vinegar, water, mustard seed, salt, turmeric, paprika, spice, garlic*), distilled vinegar, egg yolk, salt, cider vinegar, lemon juice concentrate, mustard flour, natural flavor, xanthan gum, garlic*, calcium disodium EDTA added to protect flavor. *dehydrated.

So, did I mention, I CANNOT have Soy? Thyroid+Soy=NON FUNCTIONING THYROID!! Yeah, and then did you see the 2 counts of CORN SYRUP in the CFA Sauce? Ugh…but even scarier was this ingredient: MODIFIED FOOD STARCH.

I don’t want to get all legalistic here but really, is it necessary to add a MODIFIED food to this? Couldn’t it just be a food starch – pretty sure corn starch is a food starch. That is bad enough but whatever they are putting in there as a thickening agent is so bad the FDA is making them list it as MODIFIED. Yeah, sorry, CFA – I’m saying “peace out” on your secret sauce! And I won’t be letting my kids eat it anymore. SAD FACE!
Modified Food Starch is made by physically, enzymatically or chemically altering starch to change its inherent properties. In this instance, modified does not necessarily mean genetically modified, however some modified starches are likely made from geneticallymodified ingredients.
I once knew a girl who NEVER ate out. She told me every time she did she got sick. I thought she was weird. Guessing on the food subject, she was wise beyond her years. I think my body had grown accustomed to processed foods, modified things, and grain. And 2 weeks without it – my body said, “WHAT IS THIS?” and got it out quite quickly. I still feel yucky. What is even worse is that CFA is the BEST fast food restaurant we have. McD, BK, Wendy, and the like aren’t nearly as healthy or good. So I am thinking…yeah…no more fast food.

God is good all the time. What He made – it doesn’t make us sick…unless it has been modified by human hands/minds.

So, stepping off my soap box. Not gonna post a picture as I don’t want to get sued for disparaging any food chain. But, this was sure a wake up call.

G’nite y’all.

I got a little overwhelmed this week. I am not sure if it is Thanksgiving or not. Perhaps, it was that it’s been a week and a half of no grains and I thought that the results would be quicker. I finally dug my scale out of my basement. We’ve been broken up since about May. My indicator to weight gain was that my pants were slowly not fitting anymore. After I weighed myself yesterday I wanted to break up again! I weighed 179 pounds. I have never weighed 179 pounds except when I was pregnant! Sadly, I am not pregnant. sadly being the weight not the pregnancy!

I just texted P- a fat picture! I wanted to have a record of it because rarely do I have my photo taken. When the weight falls off we will do a before and after but not now! it is not at all motivating.

However, I have noticed some differences in my moods and my attitude! This is a good thing! I have a friend that I have asked to be praying, she felt led to tell me to not worry and just put my faith and trust in the Lord! I am doing that!

So I just wanted to check in to let you know where we’re at. I weighed myself again today, I know you’re not suppose do it every day! But, I am desiring some sort of affirmation!

We are overcoming!!

Grain Free Thanksgiving…REALLY!

So – last year was my first time EVER making Thanksgiving.  I am 44, yet I have always been the guest, not the host.  My mom has been in charge pretty much my entire life.  So last year, we did the traditional Thanksgiving feast.  LOTS of grains.  Lots of bread, casseroles (rice), and stuffing!  The pie has grains in the crust.  The turkey and one other item was grain free.  That was it.  So – since we are on this grain free journey…we are mixing things up a little this year.

I asked my husband if we could do seafood for Thanksgiving.  I got a resounding YES!  So the first thing on the menu – crab legs.  Then P- said, “you should do a shrimp boil.”  Well, I’ve never done that before.  But she assured me it was easy and FAST.  My kind of cooking.  6 hours in the kitchen is NOT my idea of fun  –  plus that is ALOT of cleaning to do afterward.  The good news – this is one pot.  EVERYTHING goes into it!!

So, we will have 3 items with grains.  I can totally NOT be tempted in that regard.  My children said we HAVE to have stuffing – Grandma’s stuffing.  Grandma doesn’t do grain free (yet!).  And the rolls.  We are making Red Lobster biscuits.  Thank God for Sam’s – they sell the package.  I am not a huge fan – but my kids and husband are.  I plan on making grain free rolls too.  And the last item is corn on the cob – since that goes in the pot with the shrimp.  You could probably leave that out – but I won’t mind since I have been corn free for a year and a half now.

Here is our menu!

Shrimp Boil – Shrimp, Sausage, Corn on the Cob, Red Potatoes, Onions, Garlic, Seasoning
Crab Legs
Biscuits – Red Lobster style and Grain Free Biscuits
Green Bean Casserole
Stuffing – Has grains (will AVOID)
Dessert – Sundaes, Grain Free Chocolate Chip Cookies, Ice Cream

P- is busy with her own grain free recipes.  She is going to her mother-in-laws so she is walking in the door prepared with her own yummy things to eat – so she isn’t tempted!  I am sure she will put links to her recipes on here later.

Danielle Walker provided the recipe for the Biscuits – Against All Grain

Deliciously Organic has a recipe for the Grain Free Chocolate Chip Cookies – I am swapping the chia seeds for the gelatin as a commenter suggested.

Where to Start

Grain-Free Family Table CoverOkay…so P- and I are jumping ALL in on this thing. We downloaded and bought hard copies of Carrie Vitt’s book. Since we are both going to need to get well versed in the world of Grain Free.

Thankfully, both of us have in the past done moderated eating plans.  P- was Vegan for quite a while as she trained for trail marathons.  I’ve gone gluten and sugar free for a month fast as well as no longer eating corn and pork.

But to not have any grains FOREVER.  <Gulp>.  Okay, our older sister is all organic and raw milk.  Our brother is low carb.  He has lost a huge amount of weight.  But P- and I are not doing this to lose weight.  That is an unfortunate side affect of what our bodies are doing – but she and I know we can “tweak our diet” and do the “lemonade diet” or a fast to drop pounds and then we could start training for marathons and drop pounds.  That is NOT a long-term plan.  Stop training and running – the pounds come back on.  Eat normal foods after “fasting” the weight comes back.  Why?  Our thyroid and other adrenal glands aren’t working.  PERIOD.  Then add perimenopause to that – and yeah – we are a mess!

So, I have been reading this other blog that says as we ease in to grain free (which sorta is like low-carb/no carb) we are going to need to be aware of symptoms our body might have as we “detox” from grains.  Who knew?  Am currently reading Melissa Sevigny’s I Breathe I’m Hungry’s article on Keto Kickstarting.

What a crazy time to start this, I’m thinking to myself.  But it is now or never.  Neither P- or I are slow going type of people.  We are either in or not.  P- decided to do her first marathon and she was ALL in all the way – many times over.  So I know we can do this!

She’ll be writing soon too.

So, we were talking today.  The weight gain.  Progressive.  Aggressive.  Prayer is increasing.  Two people struggling with the same issues – miles apart.  But not extraordinary since we share DNA and cells.  Biological Identical Twins.

  • Thyroid not function – one of us diagnosed, one not.
  • Extreme weight gain at astonishing rate
  • Hair Loss at times
  • Fatigue
  • Grouchy
  • Many of the signs of adrenal fatigue/failure
  • Strong dislike of going to the doctor
  • Brain fog

Okay, through prayer and experience and research, we are detailing our journey.  Not doctors.  Not making some sort of “dogma” of how to get healthy.  But we live miles apart.  Want to encourage each other.  We are both writers (by degree and passion)…so we are going to encourage each other here.  I don’t do facebook.  So this is easier.  She has too much email so this is our platform…for now.

Not really looking for readers – just looking for answers that work for us.
